Assistant Art Editor : (DK Core)

Job Summary - Maintain high creative and technical design standards for your work.

  • The Role - Carry out a range of design tasks as and when required, for example:
  • – Help with picture research, picture management and archiving.
  • – With guidance, design spreads in accordance with the project’s design brief.
  • – With guidance, carry out technical tasks.
  • – Maintain high standards of creativity and quality at every stage of the process.
  • – Manage own workload and organize work to meet deadlines.
  • – Follow and adhere to schedule, workflow and brief for all your work.
  • – Maintain excellent communication channels with entire book team for duration of project.
  • – Close contact on a daily basis with all internal department and when necessary, external suppliers, authors and external editors.

Qualifications required - Graduate degree in Design or professional diploma from recognized institute/university. 0–2 years’ experience, preferably in related field. Basic design skill and Computer literacy in design-related software such as InDesign, Photoshop, Quark Express, and Illustrator.


Art Editor : (DK Core & Travel)

Job Summary - Work with project’s editor to manage and design illustrated non-fiction title/s as required, ensuring that all your work is produced according to schedule, quality, and budget.

The Role - Work with project editor to plan how spread content will be best visualized and used. Work constantly with project’s editor to ensure that image selection and spread designs are both visually strong and editorially appropriate. Ensure that excellent design quality is maintained at every stage of the project. The Art Editor should be able to commission photoshoots and artworks, and brief the picture researcher, along with the project editors. He/she should be able to understand and brief more complex repro work, such as complex cutouts, vignettes, blending, and image-colour management. He/she should be able to create co-editionable InDesign templates with full text style sheets. He/she will be working with complex workflows that require coordination of comments from a variety of sources e.g. art editors, editors, authors, and consultants.

Qualifications required - Graduate degree in Design or professional diploma from recognized institute/university. 3–5 years’ experience in illustrated publishing. Computer literacy in design-related software such as InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator is preferred.


Senior Art Editor : (DK Core)

Job Summary - Work with senior editor to manage a large illustrated non-fiction title or multiple smaller titles from brief to print, ensuring that it/they are produced according to schedule, quality, and within budget. Supervise and motivate junior design staff.

The Role - Work with Managing Editor to set up and run a list of illustrated non-fiction titles, from brief to print, ensuring that all titles are produced according to schedule and quality, and within budget.

  • Key Responsibilities
  • – Set, maintain and monitor high creative and technical design standards for each title.
  • – Manage, motivate and mentor a team of Art Editors working on each title on your list.
  • – With Managing Editor, set up and maintain excellent communication channels with entire book team (in-house and out-of-house) for duration of project.
  • – Ensure creative concept and design brief for each title is drawn up and adhered to throughout the project.
  • – Ensure that image selection and spread designs for your titles are both visually strong and editorially appropriate.
  • – With Managing Editor, oversee progress and development of all projects from start to finish.
  • – Work closely with projects’ Art Editors to ensure that excellent information design and creativity is maintained at every stage of a project.
  • – Liaise with DTP colleagues on technical aspects of design.
  • – With Managing Editor, strategize, troubleshoot and find solutions for problems as and when they arise.
  • – Identify need for and commission external design staff when appropriate.
  • – Work hands on key titles on your list if the need arises.

Qualifications required - Graduate degree in Design or professional diploma from recognized institute/university. Minimum 6-8 years’ experience in publishing. Computer literacy in design-related software such as InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator is preferred.
